Jan Wolkers was a famous Dutch writer, although he himself felt that he was more of a sculptor than a writer. He made a lot of other art than just his books. He sometimes signed his paintings on the back, just like the artist Mondriaan. A quiet life inspired him most to paint. The sea and the landscape were also often a great source of inspiration for Jan Wolkers' work.

In 1956, Jan Wolkers was commissioned to create the flood monument in Kruiningen. This bronze statue was finished in 1957. Jan Wolkers painted election posters for the CPN in the 1960s. Jan Wolkers was therefore truly a versatile artist who contributed his own ideas everywhere.
