Ethiopian Gurade Sword, Menelik II
This Gurade sword is the traditional sword of the Abyssinian (Ethiopia). It looks like a huge sickle, with a long blade deeply curved almost to half circle. The purpose of this very awkward blade is to strike over or around the shield of an opponent. The Shotel offered here for sale has a finely forged nicely fullered heavy and deadly sharp blade, 76 cm long, with two central fullers. The hilt is made of wood sectors in a classical form with a brass dme pommel cap.
It is probably dated to the end 19th century.
