211012 - Antique Ethiopian Gurade, Menelik II with HORN Hilt - Ethiopia.

Antique Ethiopian Gurade with Horn hilt - Menelik II - Ethiopia.

It is dated late 19th C. and used in the Italian - Ethiopian war in 1896.

The “Gurade” is the Ethiopian fighting sword / saber. It was introduced in the 19th century, probably developed and adapted to a more modern warfare from the earlier shotel, a longer and deeply curved Ethiopian sword. It is in the style of European sabers with a single edge blade. Some Gurade sabers have European made blades. The very good and larger than usual Gurade offered here has a long blade, probably of local make but of good quality. The hilt is of classical form made from three horn sectors.

The total Gurade is about 89 cm total length and the hilt is made from horn. This Gurade is carried in a close fitting leather scabbard.

The scabbard is leather. Total length 98 cm. Lt is probably dated to the late 19th C. Very good condition. This is a completely original and authentic antique piece

This Gurade was collected between 1920 and 1940 and ended up in my private collection in 2006.
