Extremely Rare Terracotta Ewe or Fon Kronkronbali altar head - Togo

This item was collected in the first half of the 20th century purchased in my private collection in 1992, with a certificate of authenticity

These voluminous objects are placed on altars and doused (offering) with millet porridge. They are known as "Kronkronbali" (children of the past). Refers to EWE rebirth ideas and the equation of life and death. They come from the area of the Mono River which forms the border between Togo and Benin.

A large ceramic pot with face carved and modeled on one side. Ewe or For people, Togo and Ghana, early to mid 19th century. Unglazed and unpainted terracotta.

Size are 30 cm high and diameter 25 cm, almost 5 kilo.
