Old & Rare Ethiopia Coptic stone begin 20th century icon from the orthodox coptic Church in Ethiopia.
Size are closed; 10 cm x 7 cm, missing part of 1 door.
This antique icon was collected between 1930 and 1940 and ended up in my private collection in 1994.
Eastern Africa, Ethiopia, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved stone traveling icon with two wide faces containing a pair of cavities incised with traditional Ethiopian Orthodox Christian iconography. One side bears a cross and an angel over a knotted orb, and opening the panels reveals several additional figures. The reverse side bears similar images of a cross and an angel, and opening the panels reveals yet another cross, a couple of angelic figures, and a depiction. Each of the panels are held in place with modern thread, though this does not detract from the overall quality of this beautiful example.
