This mask is from the mid of the 20th century and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Exceptional African mask from Angola not far from the border area with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The term askishi designates among the Chokwe, Luchazi, Luvale, Lunda and related ethnic groups, generally masks it.
This akishi represents a sociable character: Kalulu, who intervenes in the initiation and circumcision rites included in the Mukanda.
This ancient African mask is composed of a covered wooden structure. The facies is simple and typical, of superb quality and very well preserved. The braided headdress was accompanied by a full costume based on the same two-tone patterns.
It was part of a large Belgian collection including masks from southern Congo, Zambia and Angola.
