Beautiful rugs made by the Shoowa tribe from the Kuba kingdom. The magnificent Shoowa rugs are an essential part of Kuba tribal culture. They are extremely labor-intensive to make – men soften the palm fibers and weave them, while women handle the embroidery. The production of one rug takes a total of 4-6 months (!). The fascinating geometric motifs always have a specific meaning – these motifs are also seen on the body scarifications of Kuba men and women.Shoowa rugs are used as currency, a means of exchange, and are an essential part of the dowry.
