Rare African Bongo Stone Funeral head Found in Bahr El Ghazal - South Sudan.

Provenance and history of the piece: collected on 1949 in Zanga, Sudan, Bahr El Ghazal province, nowadays archaeological area of Zanga, South Sudan, Western Bahr El Ghazal province, by comboni father Elvio Giorgetti. Acquired with a bunch of other funerary posts and stone statues from South Sudan from Walter Giorgetti, relative of father Filiberto Giorgetti, on 2008.
Few of this type of stone statues have been catalogued in western museums, one of the most famous examples is located at the National Museum of African Art in Washington DC. This piece comes from the archaeological area of Zanga, 120 kilometres southwest of Raga, South Sudan.
This is an unique archaeological museum piece, of inestimable value, not easy to find of this age, and not easy to find of this beauty.

General condition: The stone head shows deep erosion from years of wind, intense sun, and rain. The volcanic rock (basalt conglomerate) is very hard, solid, and heavy. The head is intact and well-preserved, and appears beautifully alive. General wear is clearly visible.This is a unique museum piece of inestimable value, not easy to find of this age, over 1600 years old, and of such beauty.
