This hand-carved three-legged chair is a traditional Ethiopian "Jimma" chair, usually crafted from a single block of wood and featuring a high backrest with geometric cutouts.
These chairs often held ceremonial significance and were sometimes used at the coronation of kings. The chair is carved from a single piece of hardwood and features three sturdy legs and a enveloping backrest, with a beautiful patina and worn edges; it is smooth from use.
Collected in Ethiopia in the 1970s. It most likely dates from 1950–1960.
The chair weighs 9.4 kg. The height is 102 cm, with the seat at 41 cm. The seat opening is 32 cm wide, total width 37 cm, and total depth is 39 cm.
